Early warning systems in Dhenkanal promote human-elephant coexistence

Dhenkanal, Odisha, is witnessing a significant step towards mitigating human-elephant conflicts with the installation of 26 Early Warning System (EWS) towers. These GSM-based, solar-powered towers alert locals to elephant movement through sirens and lights, activated by forest staff with a simple missed call.

When inactive, the towers double as solar streetlights, enhancing safety and utility for nearby communities. This innovative approach not only safeguards human lives but also ensures the protection of elephants, fostering coexistence between humans and wildlife.

The system reflects a sustainable and community-centric solution to the growing challenge of human-wildlife conflict, marking a significant achievement in wildlife conservation efforts.
