Tusker struck down by speeding train in Odisha’s Dhenkanal; Concern mounts over train-elephants collisions

In yet another tragic incident, a tusker was killed by a speeding train at Meramundali in Dhenkanal, Odisha. This highlights the recurring issue of “killer trains” that continue to claim the lives of elephants across the state. Despite the frequency of such accidents, no train driver has been convicted under the Wildlife Protection Act (WPA) in the last 20 years, attributed to ineffective prosecution by the Forest Department. Wildlife advocates stress the urgent need for stringent measures and enhanced collaboration between the Indian Railways and the Forest Department to safeguard these majestic creatures.
