Marsh Crocodile, a Vital Predator in India’s Ecosystems, Faces Vulnerability Threats

The marsh crocodile, also known as the mugger, is one of the three crocodile species found in India. It plays a crucial role in regulating the populations of fish, amphibians, and other prey in aquatic habitats. The species thrives in a variety of environments, including freshwater wetlands, marshes, and lakes, particularly in Gujarat. Despite its adaptability, the marsh crocodile is listed as “Vulnerable” (VU) by the IUCN and is protected under Schedule-I, Part-C of The Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act, 2022, highlighting the need for conservation efforts.
