In a critical move to ensure a sustainable environment for cheetahs at Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh, officials are relocating more chitals from Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, a key step to balance the predator-prey ratio in the park. PK Verma, Deputy Director of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, confirmed that 500 chitals will be transferred to Kuno, with 17 already relocated successfully.

The introduced cheetahs, brought from abroad, depend on chitals as a primary food source. With Kuno’s current shortage of herbivores, the initiative aims to increase prey availability, promoting the cheetahs’ survival and growth in the park. Verma noted the importance of chitals in maintaining ecosystem balance, highlighting their rapid reproduction rate as an asset to Kuno’s biodiversity.

The broader relocation project also involves 2,000 chitals being sent to Pench National Park, with 1,500 already transferred.
