जून 2025 में माले महादेश्वर हिल्स वन्यजीव अभयारण्य में पाँच बाघों की ज़हर से हुई चौंकाने वाली मौत के बाद, Karnataka सरकार ने संरक्षण के लिए एक मज़बूत कदम उठाया है। सरकार ने वन अधिकारियों को वन्यजीव क्षेत्रों में पशुओं के चरने पर पूर्ण प्रतिबंध लगाने का निर्देश दिया है। इस कदम का उद्देश्य मानव-पशु संघर्ष को कम करना और वन पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र को संरक्षित करना है।
वन मंत्री ईश्वर खंड्रे ने इस निर्देश की पुष्टि करते हुए कहा कि मवेशियों, भैंसों, भेड़ों और बकरियों द्वारा अनियंत्रित चराई न केवल वन वनस्पतियों को नुकसान पहुँचाती है, बल्कि शाकाहारी जंगली जानवरों को आवश्यक चारे से भी वंचित करती है। इसके अतिरिक्त, ये पालतू जानवर वन्यजीवों में रोग संचरण का खतरा भी पैदा करते हैं।

मंत्री ने मृदा अपरदन, भूजल पुनर्भरण में कमी और मानव बस्तियों में वन्यजीवों की बढ़ती आवाजाही जैसी पारिस्थितिक चिंताओं का हवाला दिया, जिससे अक्सर जानवरों और ग्रामीणों दोनों के लिए घातक मुठभेड़ें होती हैं। चिंताजनक बात यह है कि ऐसे संघर्षों के पीड़ितों को कोई आधिकारिक मुआवज़ा नहीं मिलता, जिससे समस्या और जटिल हो जाती है।
मद्रास उच्च न्यायालय के 2022 के आदेश का हवाला देते हुए, जिसने तमिलनाडु के वन क्षेत्रों में चराई पर प्रतिबंध लगा दिया था, खंड्रे ने चेतावनी दी कि ग्रामीण अब पशुओं को चराने के लिए कर्नाटक की सीमा पार कर रहे हैं। इस प्रतिबंध का उद्देश्य उस खामी को दूर करना और सीमा के कर्नाटक वाले हिस्से में वन संरक्षण को मज़बूत करना है।
