India’s Forest Cover Growth: Modest Expansion, Strong Gains in Dense Forests

वन लेखांकन पर भारत सरकार के अब तक के पहले समर्पित प्रकाशन के अनुसार, 2010-11 और 2021-22 के बीच भारत का कुल Forest Cover 2.5% (17,444 वर्ग किमी) बढ़ा, जो 6,97,898 वर्ग किमी से बढ़कर 7,15,342 वर्ग किमी हो गया।

सबसे उल्लेखनीय बात अति सघन वनों (वीडीएफ) में 22.7% की वृद्धि रही, जो लगभग 19,000 वर्ग किमी (2010-11 में 83,502 वर्ग किमी से बढ़कर 2021-22 में 1,02,502 वर्ग किमी) हो गया। यह वन संरक्षण और पुनर्जनन के सफल प्रयासों का संकेत देता है।

हालांकि, आंकड़ों में मध्यम सघन वनों (एमडीएफ) में 11,071 वर्ग किमी की गिरावट भी दिखाई गई, जो वन पुनर्जनन और क्षरण में बढ़ती चुनौतियों का संकेत देता है। इस बीच, खुले वनों में 3.2% की वृद्धि हुई (2,95,651 से 3,05,167 वर्ग किमी)।

राज्यवार आंकड़ों से पता चला कि केरल (4,137 वर्ग किमी) में वन वन क्षेत्र में सबसे अधिक वृद्धि हुई, उसके बाद कर्नाटक (3,122 वर्ग किमी) और तमिलनाडु (2,606 वर्ग किमी) का स्थान रहा।

संयुक्त राष्ट्र SEEA फ्रेमवर्क के तहत सांख्यिकी और कार्यक्रम कार्यान्वयन मंत्रालय द्वारा किए गए इस वन लेखाकरण अभ्यास में न केवल भौतिक वन संपत्तियों को मापा गया, बल्कि वनों की स्थिति – बायोमास, कार्बन स्टॉक, पुनर्जनन और आर्थिक मूल्य – का भी मूल्यांकन किया गया।

रिपोर्ट में बेहतर बायोमास और कार्बन भंडारण की सराहना की गई है, साथ ही एक चेतावनी भी दी गई है: पुनर्जनन दरों में गिरावट और आग के बढ़ते जोखिम भारत की वन स्थिरता के लिए खतरा बने हुए हैं।
