AWIC Recognized as South India’s First Goverment Scientific Expert in Wildlife Forensics

-

In a major step towards strengthening wildlife crime investigations, the Advanced Institute of Wildlife Conservation (𝗔𝗜𝗪𝗖) in Vandalur, Tamil Nadu, has become South India’s first government-recognized scientific expert in wildlife forensics. The recognition follows a state government order passed on October 7, 2024, aimed at accelerating the forensic analysis of wildlife samples for law enforcement and conservation efforts.

The AIWC, established in 2017 by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, is now equipped with state-of-the-art forensic labs specializing in DNA sequencing, histopathological tests, and morphometry. This development is expected to significantly enhance wildlife crime investigations, which often face delays due to sample backlogs at other national institutions.

With its new status, AIWC has already started collaborating with the Karnataka and Puducherry governments for wildlife sample testing, ensuring quicker and more efficient forensic analysis. The institute’s recognition is expected to boost wildlife law enforcement efforts across southern states.

Mr. A. Udhayan, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Director of AIWC, emphasized the institute’s role in wildlife forensics and law enforcement, stating that it is well-prepared to support the region’s conservation efforts by working closely with wildlife departments in neighboring states.

This recognition marks a critical advancement in wildlife conservation, addressing a growing need for forensic expertise in combating wildlife-related crimes in India.
