Arunachal Pradesh to Implement Hydropower Projects Only with Local Community Consent, Says CM Pema Khandu

Itanagar, July 17, 2024

In a significant move towards inclusive development, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced that all hydropower projects in the state will be implemented only with the consent of local communities. This decision aims to ensure that the interests and concerns of indigenous populations are addressed in the state’s development plans.

During a recent address, CM Khandu emphasized the importance of community involvement in hydropower projects, highlighting that local consent is crucial for the sustainable and equitable development of the region. The Chief Minister’s statement reassures communities that their voices will be heard and respected in the decision-making processes for these projects.

“All hydropower projects in Arunachal Pradesh will be implemented only with the consent of the local communities,” Khandu stated, underscoring the administration’s commitment to maintaining transparency and fostering trust with the indigenous populations (Arunachal24.in).

Arunachal Pradesh, with its vast hydropower potential, has been exploring various projects to harness this renewable energy source. However, past initiatives have faced opposition from local communities concerned about environmental impact, displacement, and loss of livelihoods. The new policy addresses these concerns by ensuring that projects move forward only with the explicit approval of those most affected.

The Chief Minister also reiterated that the government would engage in extensive consultations with community leaders and stakeholders to facilitate informed decision-making. This approach is expected to pave the way for more harmonious and mutually beneficial development projects in the state.

This announcement marks a progressive step in Arunachal Pradesh’s development strategy, aligning with broader national and international principles of sustainable and inclusive growth. By prioritizing local consent, the state government hopes to achieve a balance between harnessing its natural resources and preserving the rights and livelihoods of its Indigenous communities.

The implementation of this policy will be closely monitored, and the government has committed to providing regular updates on the progress of hydropower projects and community consultations.
