Why Is Pangolin Smuggling a Serious Wildlife Crime?

Pangolins are among the most heavily trafficked mammals in the world. Their scales are in demand in illegal wildlife markets, largely because of traditional medicinal beliefs, despite there being no scientifically established medicinal benefits.

These unusual, scale-covered mammals play an important role in maintaining ecological balance. By feeding on ants and termites, they help regulate insect populations and contribute to healthy forest ecosystems.

Illegal hunting, habitat destruction and organised trafficking have made pangolins increasingly vulnerable across their natural range.

Authorities must investigate the possible source of the scales of Illegal Pangolin Trade in Chhattisgarh , trace their intended destination and examine whether interstate or organised trafficking networks are involved.
